yes I did. The device is /dev/nsa0

Most of this data is not already compressed. Just a bunch of
text files. I manually created one file that is large enough to bring
the total to around 17GB. I'm reading these values from the
output of du and dh.

Overhead? Not sure what that means. I've never had so many
files that they would cause a backup issue like this (??) :)

I don't normally use multiple volumes for backups so I many not
be much help here but according to the man page, restore is
supposed to automatically notify you when the next volume is
required.
