(Note that OP didn't answer yet to confirm whether or not the .isos were
properly burned as iso image, as opposed to stored into a cd9660 fs as
file. This does happen now and then, no matter how silly it sounds. For
some reasons peecees do not support booting from such.)

Dude I feel your pain. I have had hap-hazard results with burning
the latest iso's too. I have an older P200 machine that will boot
the 4.9 CD just fine, but place anything above 4.9, like the latest
6.0-RELEASE and it will not boot.
You (both) might note that since 4.9, FreeBSD uses the newer CD boot
method _only_. If this is a problem and you can't, for example, boot
from a floppy to perform a network assisted install, you might have to
resort to tricks like installing 4.9 and upgrading, or doing a hard
drive swapping dance.
It might well be that knoppix chose to use the older method or even
supports both (if this is possible). I don't know what FreeSBIE
supports, so it might be worthwhile to look into that. If nothing
else, it can be used as a stepping stone.
Apart from disk geometry trickery (you really have to know which geometry
description each machine prefers and compensate if necessairy) the latter
should not pose too many problems, even.
I've also noticed that the packaged don't install properly from
the CD's I burn with the iso images and I can no longer install my
favorite way via FTP within my own LAN. I can mount the iso using
mdconfig but then when I try to load anything it whacks out sayiug it
can't load the base stuff. This method has been my preferred method
since 1997 so I know it at least used to work. They just don't make'em
like they used to.
Care to elaborate, with error messages and the like?

Yes and thanks for asking. Today I tried to install apsfilter on a 6.0
machine at my office. The CD of course crapped out by saying it cannot find
the package, something about it being on disk #2. So I mounted the iso image
that calls itself disk2 and tried again but still no go. Then I tried to
install it via FTP from several of the main sites and it crapped out saying
error #1, check debug screen for more information.
I'd really like to know what happened. I install the OS on several test
machines and help friends setup gateway servers like I use on my home LAN. I
used to mount the iso image in my home directory under a name like
FreeBSD-4.9-RELEASE and then install via FTP using the floppies. This worked
perfectly for me for many years but these days when I try this method is
craps out. I used to install packaged this way too but again since 5.0 and
later it just doesn't work this way anymore.
