Hi,
I installed FreeBSD and I'm trying to bring the X Server up and
running. As per the handbook, I did the following:
# cd /usr/ports/x11/xorg
# make install clean
# Xorg -configure
# Xorg -config xorg.conf.new
but the computer hangs with a black screen.
When I type:
# startx, the X server seems to run with the "X" cursor and the 3
windows (login, xterm, xterm) show up but that's it.
I used to have it working properly with 4.5. What can be wrong?
Thanks.
Try (adding and) specifying a window manager or desktop in the startx script:
Blackbox - Basic, fast
XFWM - CDE style, fast
KDE or gnome desktops - Overkill, slower
Xorg defaults to using twm which is pretty basic though it does have LCR click menu's and can be made more useful.
