trouble, su works.
it's simple, KDE 3.4 just refuses to enter admin mode. No sorry messages
or anything. It accepts the password in the usual way then nothing but
some standard splash type screen where you expect the admin
dialogues/choices. This problem was evident in some earlier release
(2002) but never resolved.
It works here with my KDE 3.5.0 install. Don't know when/how it was fixed
but it does function here. The workaround used to be in konsole/terminal
at a user prompt to do: kdesu kcontrol This brings up the dialog box for
root's password and runs the control center as if it were root. Shouldn't
do this all the time, only for things you need the "admin mode" for.

Hmmm... thanks, I'll give that a try.
I'm on the wrong box just now.
