Getting java working in Freebsd 6.0 with firefox and xfce??

Ive read and read, and most of what I read all say to do the same
thing. It sounds like a very simple task but for some reason nothing
appears to be as it should. I'll paste from a web board the
instructions I read.

---
install java =

cd /usr/ports/java/jdk14 ;make install clean;

"piece of cake so far"

then link the plugin =

ln -s /usr/local/jdk1.4.2/jre/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/X11R6/lib/browser_plugins

---
Ok, sounds very simple. There is no directory called
/usr/local/jdk1.4.2* on my computer anywhere. I wonder if there is
something I am missing or????

.
