Trouble with SpamAssassin

Dunno if it's something I've done or a problem with perl (v5.8.8) or
SpamAssassin (v3.1.0_6), but I've experienced severe performance problems with
SA since updating both perl and SA. What once ran moderately quickly now
runs so slowly that SA child processes time out, linting the SA configuration
takes > 5 minutes and sa-learn --sync requires upwards of 5 minutes to do what
it reports as mere seconds of work.
System is currently at 5.4-STABLE #6, with perl and SA at the versions indicated
above. Machine is a 1.7GHz Pentium 4 Dell Dimension 8200.
Anybody else experiencing similar performance problems with a similar s/w
combo?
Thanx,
Bob Melson
