- MacOS has no ability to "uninstall",

Depends, many applications are just an .app folder structure you put
anywhere you want, and to uninstall the application, you just delete
that icon.

However, this does not hold for all applications, some apps for example
provide services to the system (e.g. kernel extensions).

true. if you are able to just "drag & drop" into your application "folder" to install it, then it can be uninstalled by putting it in the "trash", but for 95% of things stuff gets put all over the system (ie. anything that requires your pw to install)

change icons, or set default apps for file types (ie. .avi, .pdf,
etc). Without installing 3rd party apps you have to pay for at least.

I'm quite sure that I _have_ changed a default app for a file type
without 3rd party apps, but I forgot how since it was some time ago. It
might be the case that I vi-ed an XML file for it.

i stand corrected. after much more poking around and consulting with our resident Mac guru we finally figured out how to change the default application for a file type, but still no way (that we can find at least) to set an icon for an Application.app directory sort of layout w/o creating the directory and xml from scratch, which kinda defeats the whole purpose of using a Mac ;)

- Linux is a patchwork of programs loosly held together with scripts and no 2 "distros" are alike enough to make a single binary install in any complexity, not to mention every distro i've seen that's supposedly "idiot proof" can't even find USR PCI modems on comm 5.

COM5: is DOS speak. However, are you referring to PCI cards really just
being a serial device at another IO address that can be determined using
the established PNP methods, or Windows-only cards that do NOT speak the

this was refering to a Performance Pro hardware controlled PCI modem from USR that puts itself on "COM5" for the sake of understanding. i suppose i could have said "it uses /dev/ttyS4, or /dev/cuaa4, or.. umm.." :)
