Subject: freebsd tar incompatible with linux?

Actually, `linux' installations tend to use GNU tar, which is
incompatible with everyone else. FreeBSD 5 and up use bsdtar, but still
provide gnu tar as `gtar'. Had you used that, there'd be no problem,
unless you have files in excess of 2GB to archive. Of course, had gnu
tar been a sensible tar implementation, you would never have had to ask
the question.

Is there still any way to get back my data?

Install a better tar. There might be a bsdtar available for linux.
Otherwise give `star' a shot. Schily's tar is a very flexible tar
implementation with tons of features and it supports a lot of more and
less compatible and/or standard tar formats.
