I ended up doing mount / and the used ed to fix the offending syntax per the
link in Mr. Gilbert's post.

Greetings:
I left a " off of a Boolean in my rc.conf file resulting in a syntax
error that prevents the os from loading properly. Being a FreeBSD noob, I
can't get into an editor to change the file. What is the procedure to get
into the file and add the offending quote? (or lack thereof). I get a
command not found when trying to use vi or /usr/bin/vi. This happens
regardless of what mode I boot into - i.e. safe or single user. I don't
think it'd matter if I could find vi though as the shell access given is
an unprivileged account without the ability to su. I'm sure it's easy
enough once one knows the trick. Thanks in advance.
