My firewall is currently 2x800MHz PIIIs running FBSD 6.1. It

Dunno about that. Your router probably does a decent job at

Gack to the phone line, although the DHCP could present some

You do realize that FBSD is not based on SYSV, yes? It is based
on BSD, so there are some significant differences on how things are
done. If you want to play SYSV again, you could consider Slowaris
from SUN. The i386 version is finally free, and is definitely SYSV.
Then you have to deal with the crap SUN provides to make it "better"...

I'd say put FBSD on the PIII, and play with it. At most it
will cost you a couple of CDs and the download. (And, yeah, I'd
suggest burning the CD's - mistakes are easier to correct if you
throw the boot CD into the drive and start over).

From there, you can decide what to do. Just getting an X window
configured can be a challenge. Not getting one running, getting one
running and set up as you like it. I prefer motif flavored ones
myself, likely from the late 80s when I played with NCD boxes that
finally replaced a lovely TV9220...
