You do realize that FBSD is not based on SYSV, yes? It is based
on BSD, so there are some significant differences on how things are
done. If you want to play SYSV again, you could consider Slowaris
from SUN. The i386 version is finally free, and is definitely SYSV.
Then you have to deal with the crap SUN provides to make it "better"...
In his post the OP said it has been since about 1990 when he last
ran Unix and it was on an NCR tower. At that point we don't know
if it was a fairly new NCR or an older one. I've done some work
on NCR's in that era and they were often System III or earlier, and
in that respect they were more like BSD than Sys V.
So IOW we don't know if he's SysV or System III oriented. If the
latter the BSD should be quite comforatable.
And Solaris is definately different than other SysVs out there.
