That depends. The bits that actually hit the disk, have a good chance of
survival without corruption thanks to softupdates and fsck. Bits that never
hit the disk because they were in memory are lost forever. If your data is
important, you should make sure that the infrastructure it lives on is
reliable.

The above goes for any operating system though.

Is it possible to really uninstall a package?

Yes. pkg_delete.

My Firefox install failed (possibly something to do with Gnome), but all its
dependencies were left after the pkg_delete.

Of course they were. Take a look at the sysutils/pkg_cutleaves port if you
are worried about useless dependencies eating diskspace for no reason.

I may have found them all, but this is a bit too much like Windows where
applications are often never really gone.

I can't even see the slightest relationship or overlap in the way FreeBSD does
package management (ports, pkg_* tools) and Microsoft does (it doesn't).

Also see the pkg_which(1) (part of sysutils/portupgrade) manual page for a
nice way of ensuring no stale files are left around.

Since the Mozilla Suite is dying and I can't install Firefox, is lynx my
only browser choice now?

No.

Other packages also failed to install with pkg_add -r. These include
tinyfugue, playmidi, and amanda-client. At least with the first,
installing from source is pretty easy.

Are the others not in the source tree?

I have a USB to serial adapter. In Linux it's /dev/ttyUSB0. What would it be
called in FreeBSD?

Depends on the chipset.
