FreeBSD 6.0 sound card issues

I'm now using a CS4281 PCI card, and it works.. sort of. I can play a
..mp3 or a CD, but I have to set the volume (in xgmixer) to max just for
it to sound soft. Does this mean I should consider using another sound
card? If so, I don't like the idea of spending more money on a P166, so
it'd have to be a OPTi 82C931 ISA PnP card.

Also, xgmixer shows no synth control, so I have to wonder if playing
..mid files is supported. Is some special setup required?
