Well, there is some good news to this--taking a look at the PCI slots
on this computer in question (which is second-hand), there's a sound
card installed towards the bottom that I overlooked. However, I get
nothing, not even audio out, when I switch the plugs over to that. I
do think FreeBSD has noticed it though; I have two audio drivers loaded
it says, the VIA and a SoundBlaster card. So my question now is, how
do I set the SoundBlaster card to be the default, if that's what I
should do? If I shouldn't do that, what should I do?
Thanks,
- Brien
Hi - I have a VIA KT400A chipset based KD7A mobo with the 8235 south bridge
and have had the same problem. The old microphone from Soundblaster would
not work. I also have a headset (earphone/mic combo) that when plugged in
by itself will not work. In my box of old adapters I saw an inline "power
adapter" that plugs into the socket on the mobo and the cord from the mic
then plugs into this. This allows the headset mic to work. The old
Soundblaster mic will also not work with this configuration either.
I think the VIA wiring for the DC bias voltage needed by the mic does not
conform to either the Soundblaster standard (old) or the newer Intel pinout
standard. The mic doesn't work because it gets no DC bias. Looking at the
pinouts for the header on the mobo shows that the DC bias is separated from
the audio part of the mic-input connector. I also have no recall of where
the "power adapter" came from or why it was in my junk box.
I'm not sure what to recommend on how to proceed at this point. I did want
to pass along what I'd noticed with regard to my own vt8235. Basically the
VIA mic-in wiring is non standard and this the cause of the problem.
