Should I give up on FreeBSD?

O.K. so I am writing this out of some fustration.

I have spent the last week and this weekend trying to get my recently
installed FreeBSD to be useful.

I still can't get java to work in my browser (any of them).

I have read thru this newsgroup, tried to take the suggestions, read
thru the handbook. set the links to /compat etc, and now I get a bus
error when launching the browser.

The only way to get back to crippled operations is to remove the links.

I was a big fan of FreeBsd back in the mid-90s. I was using it
continujously until a couple of years ago when the old dinsaur I was
running it on finally died.

So now I have a brand new system and fresh install, but no good
workstation.

I use RedHat Fedora professionally because that is what our shop has
chosen. I chose FreeBsd for personal use because I really buy in to
the philosophy of the release-engineered set, etc., and because I do
have some gripes with Fedora and Linux packaging in general.

Perhaps some of the wiser of you out there will tell me I am wasting my
time and that FreeBSD - since it is (or was recently) billing itself as
a server o/s - is never going to be the good workstation I am looking
for.

I simply can't beleive the diffuculties I am running in to. Fedora
core X is way easier than this to deal with.

Your thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated.
