Hi,
I have found which ones are good, eg. 3ware, Adaptec, and even Intel
Matrix (may be). And thanks for all the recommendation.
If I got one of these card ready, with 4 identical SCSI disks, how can I
setup a RAID 5 storage in FreeBSD? (6.x)
First as far as i know 3ware is for ATA disks, not SCSI. If you want to do
raid with ATA disks (which at present is a very good solution) the good
cards are 3ware and areca.
If you want to use SCSI then disks will be 3 times or 4 times more expensive.
Good controllers are Mylex and such.
In any case these cards completely deal with the raid stuff by themselves,
you have absolutely nothing to configure in FreeBSD, Linux, etc. Some of these
cards come with programs which allow to configure the card from within the
operating system (frequently Windows, sometimes Linux, perhaps FreeBSD) but
all can be configured from BIOS.
If you don't want to invest in a raid card (which is not reasonable because
they are cheap compared to the disks) then you can use software raid from
FreeBSD and a bunch of disks on the ATA or SATA ports. You take the risk
that a crappy SIl Sata controller may work poorly. Adaptec is known to have
controllers using this crappy chip, beware. If you have SCSI disks and a good
SCSI card, then software raid may be a good option.
