I installed the disks, booted the system, installed
asr-utils, and followed the GUI.
Once that was complete, I rebooted, made sure that the
asr controller noted that there was one (1) logical drive
present (plus SMART), and then went into sysinstall to configure
the RAID.
And, yes, it is RAID-5 with 1 hot spare. It was easy,
and since there wasn't anything on it I could trash, it was
easy to redo when some hardware issues popped up - like the
crappy RAID enclosure I first purchased. Now I have one that
SuperMicro markets, and it is nice - the rails are extruded
aluminum, not stamped steel like the first no-name piece of
crap, the SCSI IDs are hard wired, so you have the choice of
0-4 or somthing above 7. The first piece of crap you had to
set them, and there was NO sense of order between the micro-
switches and the slot they served, so discovering what was
the bad drive (turned out there were TWO bad drives, each
one DOA) was a huge pain. With the SuperMicro unit, all you
have to do is pull one, and it is either the first ID or
the last. And, pulling a drive is a simple as flipping the
lever - the first piece of crap you flipped the lever, and
NOTHING HAPPENED!!!!!!
