The problem is that the local part of the users' email addresses will not
match the username. For example a user might have fred@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,
alf@xxxxxxxx and frederick.blogs@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, his username here
might not even be fred.
That's a standard feature of fetchmail. :-)
poll pop3.domain.de timeout 20:
user thomas.koellmann password topsecret is tom here
Upstream user name is thomas.koellmann (@domain.de), local user
getting the mail is tom. (Do I completely misunderstand you?)
Getting all the mail with fetchmail is no problem, my problem is
distributing it locally to the appropriate people, whose usernames don't
necessarily match the local parts of the email addresses.
It's also possible that fred might decide to use other
email names starting with "fred" so I will need to include wildcards into
the conversion rules.
You mean fred claiming (on usenet, e.g.) his address was fred-usenet,
or fred+spam, or whatever? This will not work anyway unless fred's
upstream mail provider accepts such wildcarding stuff.
My ISP allows unlimited email addresses and lets me create as many mailboxes
as I need. Mail not matching any specific mailbox just goes into the
default one.
If he does,
it's not a problem because fetchmail used like above doesn't care to
whom mail where addressed.
Agreed fetchmail doesn't care, but the local MDA does. I was originally
intending to use maildrop as the MDA to distribute the mail since it seemed
easy to configure but then I came across a couple of problems when I
actually implimented it. I've done a bit more research into exim now and it
looks as though it will do what I need.
