FreeBSD 64-bit: Desktop ready?

I have intention of running a server, just a desktop machine. Recently I got a donation of hardware which includes what I believe is a decent 64-bit machine, though the processor is a mere Sempron 2800+/64.

Having been told FreeBSD 64-bit isn't quite ready for production use, I was wondering if any has anecdotal evidence to support using it for the desktop. I'm a writer/researcher with little use for things like Flash and Java plugins, but I do treasure stability and reliability. I'd be willing to use OpenOffice in 32-bit compatibility mode, if necessary. I intend to build everything from scratch, assuming CPUTYPE=k8.
