i'm not saying it will work, but as a person with 4 Alpha's running FreeBSD i've seen a LOT of things that say i386 *only*, yet compile and run just fine on Alpha. it's worth a try to just comment it out of the Makefile. worst case is it doesn't load or locks the machine when you try it.
