first guess at the issue is corrupt ram or HDD.
Unless your system swaps (hint: swapinfo), bad RAM is much more likely.
You don't say what kind of machine you have. If it is a X86 machine, you can use
the memtest86 (http://www.memtest.org/) program to find out if RAM is bad. Let it run for at least a few hours.
