I run a FreeBSD-6.1-RELEASE on several computers in my LAN. Here is the
basic setup:

Machine A [10.0.0.253/8] = NAT / IPFW / Gateway. This machine has two NICs.
One connected to my cable modem and the other to a switch that connects the
other machines on the network.

Machine B [10.0.0.254/8] = DHCP, Apache, lpd, etc... has only one NIC that
connects to the switch. The Windows XP machines on the network acquire their
LAN settings from this machine and print to a laser printer on this box.

All of this works well.

I recently acquired a D-Link DI-624 wireless router. I'd like to use it to
allow some wireless laptops to connect to the network and the Internet. I
don't want this D-Link box connected to the cable modem because that will
negate Machine A running IPFW. I'd like to hook the D-Link wireless router
into this network and allow the wireless laptops that connect to it to
access the Internet through Machine A.

I can't seem to find a way to set the D-Link router to use Machine A as it's
gateway. I've tried several setups but no go. The techs at D-Link say this
will work but then they get all twisted around when they try to explain it
to me. The first tech I spoke to seem to have it but then she told me to
connect the wireless router directly to machine A. This would mean that I
either have to disconnect Machine A from the switch which looses the other
WinXP boxes. I guess I could do this but then I loose all the ports on my
switch and there are only four ports on DI-624. Or disconnect Machine A from
the cable modem and loose my IPFW firewall I've worked so hard to perfect.

Can anyone offer some advice here. The D-Link techs were helpful and I was
surprised that they at least offered some support, but I think this went
over their heads (at least the ones I spoke with) and they couldn't nail it
down for me.

Just turn off the built in dhcp server and tie it to your lan on the lan
side of the router. Unless of course you want to use it's NAT to keep
the wireless isolated then you could hook the wan interface to your lan
and let it pull dhcp from your server.
