I can only boot form the 6.2 installation CD (that's the only 6.2-

to execute dmesg is choosing an Emergency Holographic Shell from Fixit
option in sysinstall when the CD boots. However, I cannot execute
"any" command there except cd and pwd (as far as I tried), let alone
mount, dmesg, or even ls. I would appreciate any help on how to get to
a shell, the USB stick mounted, and dmesg executed. It seems that
basically nothing is loaded at that stage, so i cannot execute any
command.

You need the live filesystem CD:http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/new-users/x779.html
Hmm, thinking about it - I'm not really sure it will work, as your SATA
DVD rom isn't supported.

yes, i'm not sure if it'll work at all...

As for the Intel NIC, sysinstall does not show me any output except

When you get to the main menu of sysinstall, press Scroll lock, then use
page up / page down to roll back in the screen buffer to see the dmesg
output.

damn! I though I had to press Alt-F2 to go to the other console and
then press Scroll Lock to see the messages, but there was nothing
there! anyhow, here is the relevant part for the NIC, SATA controller,
and other things:

Is there a way to get a USB stick bootable with FreeBSD loaded? I have

It is possible, but I have never done it.http://typo.submonkey.net/articles/2006/04/13/installing-freebsd-on-u...

the ISOs here are ~ 500MB, but my USB stick is only 128MB, so I have
to get one with a higher capacity. I just wanted a minimal
installation of FreeBSD on the USB stick, just basic functionality to
see what device is working, etc.

Can your machine boot from usb sticks? And have you tried it?

Yes, it can boot from USB stick. I have booted to linux successfully
using my USB stick to partition the hard disk with GNOME Partition
Editor (GParted). I have used syslinux to make the USB stick bootable,
copied the Parted Magic (a live USB based on GParted) files unto the
stick, and booted the system...it works flawlessly.
In fact, I can get the dmesg using the linux installed on the USB
stick (I'm not sure if it will be of any use to you though, since it's
linux).
