you're using the default install kernel.
The FreeBSD GENERIC config hasn't had any sound support for as long as I
can remember, probably never had. As the other followup explained, in
current FBSD versions you load module(s) for that - very Linux-y.:-) Of
course you can compile the support into the kernel once you know what
driver you need, but there's isn't much point unless you dislike kernel
modules as a matter of principle.
It's probably fair to add that sound is not a huge
priority in the FreeBSD community. You'll find some
support for common devices, but not much more.
Hm, well, there are 25 HW-specific sound drivers in an i386 installation
of 6.1 - don't know what percentage of existing devices that represents,
but it looks pretty impressive to me...
