Hello,
I am having issues installing freebsd 7 on a sony vaio CR240F laptop. I
have made 4 Partitions on the system (This was done using windows vista
volume shrink feature. This was the same was I did to install freebsd 6.2
on a 3ware RAID array without issue.) 1 x Restore (came with laptop) 1 x
Windows Vista Home Premium 1 x OpenSuse 10.3 (no issue)
1 x FreeBSD
Also try the install with the 3 partitions, no Linux install and same
issue windows vista volume gets corrupted.
When I make the partition (IE: enable it so its taged as 165) It shows
correctly. I then go to the slice making part of the install and
everything goes well. I click basic MBR and it goes thorugh the install
finishes in about 10-15 minutes.
But the issue is the boot loader doesn't show the Linux partition
(obviously never has) thats not the issue, the issue is after installing
freebsd and pressing F2 for Dos windows gives a "Error unable to find
wininit.exe" This is the first time I've seen this and also since my HD is
relatively big 250GB but not sure why this is happening FreeBSD boots up
without issue, the only problem is windows doesn't boot. Any help would be
appreciated and also anything I can do to fix this if it's a bug.
Partitions Here: 160Gb drive
1 - Windows Vista
2 - FreeBSD
3 - Linux
4 - Extended
D: Windows XP 15Gb
E: FAT32 Data 15Gb
Linux Swap 1GB
Set Part. 2 as active install FreeBSD and Bootloader on Part. 2
Set Part 1 as active and install Vista. Install XP on extended part drive D:
Dual boots with Vista
set part. 3 active install Linux with Lilo or grub.
Above procedure avoids messing with the MBR which Windows likes to own.
Tho. there are ways to make windows boot loader work with FreeBSD and Linux.
Boot:
Linux
FreeBSD
Windows - Then get Windows XP/Vista menu
FreeBSD Boot usually shows Linux and DOS (windows) OK
Order of preference: FreeBSD, Windows XP, Linux, Windows Vista
Can be done...
this laptop as it turns out Sony wants to make this laptop as vista
only as possible.
The way I wanted to do it was do all OS loading using Windows Vistas
boot loader instead of using FreeBSD ugly bootloader or grub/lilo
which will make windows happy as it wount change. I thought that
specifiying that I don't want a boot loader on the MBR but rather one
on the partition which is what I set, Linux was ready and already
loading using windows vista's boot loader. The only issue was FreeBSD
as i'm thinking this is a bug in FreeBSD 7
as installing the bootloader onto the partition shouldn't render the
windows/dos partition as status "corupted as per sony's HD repair
tool" Can't run 6.2 as it panics when probing for the cardbus with a
msg saying "This is most likely a hardware issue" yet freebsd 7 boots
fine but craps up the windows bootloader to coruption. Only thing is I
don't know how to debug bootloader bugs etc.. The main pc (the one
with the 3ware raid) has this setup without issue which all boot using
windows vista without an issue and I don't feel like messing that up
by trying to install freebsd 7.
Any further comment would be appreciated.
And yes I made the restore cd's
.
