I am new to BSD and thought that I had completed my first install but upon the final reboot the system boots to a text display instead of the Gnome desktop that I thought that I had chosen during the install. Can anyone point me in the right direction to fix this?

you're looking for a GUI on boot, then I believe you need to set up XDM or similar...

Some people consider this to be the joy of working with BSD as they have total 100% control over their systems. The cruft kept to a minimum.

If the person had chosen to not install X & gnome, then I would agree with your cruft comment. However, if the human decides to add X as part of system install then I don't think it is unrealistic to expect that the display manager be set to automatically start along with all the other daemons. If you chose it, it's not cruft.
