What is the layout of your partitions? How much disk space have you left
for your root partition?

I've tried two layouts, the default "A" ("Auto defaults" I think)
gives, and a
simple layout with one swap partition (512MB) and one main partition
for
everything (rest of the drive, mounted to /, 19.5GB).

BTW, I had wondered if the hard drive was bad, but trying a different
hard drive in the system did not resolve the problem.

I haven't installed FreeBSD on Sun boxes before. Might it be some unknown
hardware compatility problems?

How would one go about figuring that out?

Hard to find out where the problem arises. I guess it were because of
a buggy disk driver for SUN machines? I suggest you turn off softupdates
during the installation and try again. And you may try to shut down the
disk write cache during the process (is it possible to do so in the
course of installation?)

How would I go about doing those things?

Addendum: Just found out how to disable the softupdate, but
disabling it did not remedy the problem. Also, it seems like now
(actually it's been doing it before I tried your suggestion), it gets
past installing the base system to "extracting GENERIC into /boot",
then it freezes at 12%.
