My interpretation of what he said above is that he tried a static IP
address on the client, and THEN the ping didn't work. Looks as if the
client isn't receiving packets.

Could be. Though the latter seems like a reasonable guess, the former
wasn't what I read[1]. The more important point here is that hard facts
beat vague allusions any day when debugging this sort of thing.

[1] Too early to start to interpret even if it was a good idea.

Thanks for answering, jpd. Bob Eager guessed right. I`ve configured a
fixed IP and tried to ping.

Here is wht tcpdump catched:
05:03:19.671260 IP 0.0.0.0.bootpc > 255.255.255.255.bootps: BOOTP/
DHCP, Request from 00:0e:a6:5f:cf:8a (oui Unknown), length: 300
(and I see this message every 5 seconds, until CTRL+C)

It`s not very hard to find what`s happening. The request goes, but the
server doesn`t answer. Oddly strange, because the server answers the
DHCP requests from the Linux PC.

But I know the answer. I`ve forgot to mention one little thing that I
thought useless. I have TWO network cards, the VIA onboard and one
Realtek 8139. Before you think funny things about me, I did connect
the cable on the correct plug :D

But these two cards messed up the DHCP client. I unplugged the Realtek
card and the FreeBSD connected correctly. I am now posting from the
FreeBSD.

But now I ask: How do I do to use these two cards?? I`d like to use
FreeBSD as a router and configure all the traffic to pass from VIA to
Realtek card.
