I am just now getting around to updating FreeBSD from 7.0-RELEASE to
7.2-RELEASE. Everything was working wonderfully under 7.0, but I
thought it would be a good idea to keep up to date. I began by
following these instructions, as described athttp://www.freebsd.org/releases/7.2R/announce.html

# freebsd-update upgrade -r 7.2-RELEASE
# freebsd-update install
# shutdown -r now

At this point, the system restarts. Then the system hangs, and leaves
the following on the screen:

And that's it. It just hangs there.

I tried inserting a 7.2-RELEASE CD disk1 to boot, but the results are
similar.

When I tried to boot from my 7.0-RELEASE CD disk1, it successfully
boots, but I noticed that the BTX version is 1.01.

By the way, I have performed a similar upgrade from 7.0-RELEASE to 7.2-
RELEASE on a couple other systems, which seems to work fine. The one
on which it fails is a 5 year old Dell PowerEdge 1600SC, if that makes
any difference.

I sure would appreciate any suggestions to help me solve this puzzle.

Ok. I am replying to my own plea for help now in the hopes that my
experience so far may be helpful to somebody else hopelessly puzzled
by the same problem I have been having.

I have been trying to solve this problem for several days. First, I
went back to Dell's web page for my computer, and noticed that I have
been on BIOS rev. A12 for this system, but the highest one they are
offering is A11. I *know* that I downloaded A12 from their site about
a year ago--only thing I can think of is that perhaps some problems
came up and they withdrew A12. So I downgraded the flash BIOS to A11,
but my problem was not solved.

I could boot from the FreeBSD 7.0 live filesystem CD, but the 7.2 live
filesystem CD hangs as described in my original posting.

I booted from the 7.0 live filesystem and started the Fixit shell.
Then I mounted the root partition from my hard disk under Fixit's CD-
based filesystem. Then I copied the entire /boot directory from the CD
to my hard disk's /boot directory, over-writing the /boot directory
which had been recently updated by the 7.2 installation process. Then
I tried re-booting, and voila! it booted!

Then I tried the same thing again, but this time copying the 7.2 CD /
boot directory onto my hard drive's /boot directory, rebooted, and ...
<hang>.

With a bit more research on the web, I guessed that that "BTX Loader"
is contained in the file "/boot/loader". So I copied the entire 7.2
CD /boot directory onto my hard drive's /boot directory. Then I copied
the /boot/loader file from my 7.0 CD onto my hard drive's /boot
directory (over-writing the BTX Loader version 1.02 with the older
version 1.01), thus populating my hard drive's /boot directory with
files from 7.2 except for the "loader" program. Then I tried rebooting
the system, and it came up!

If anybody knows how this procedure might eventually harm my system, I
would be grateful to know, but at this point I am just very happy that
it is back up again!
