What is the output of sysctl -a|grep snd ?
Perhaps there is an incorrect numbering for the sound output.
On my machine running 8.1 with snd_ich
(and also on my laptop which uses snd_hda) sound works OK.
Here i see things such as:
hw.snd.verbose: 0
hw.snd.maxautovchans: 16
hw.snd.default_unit: 0
hw.snd.version: 2009061500/i386
hw.snd.default_auto: 0
