Are you using X11 or connecting remotely?
If X11, what x-terminal?
If remote, what term?
For BitchX, i find it best to use screen(1) from pkgsrc/misc/screen/
$ export TERM=screen; screen -D -R
[inside screen]
$ BitchX
-lava
