Hi,

I'm working on a new, free periodical called "The Joy of Unix". My goal is
to provide a quality source for Unix enthusiasts of all levels. The focus
will be on free Unixes (IE: Linux and *BSD), in both desktop and server
roles. All content in the publication will be released under the Creative
Commons license, which is essentially a BSD license for text and other
creative works.

The Joy of Unix will be published either bi-weekly or monthly, depending
on on the amount of material that is submitted. I will of course be
writing articles myself, in addition to acting as editor and proofreader,
but I would love to be able to run articles on a wide range of topics, for
a variety of viewpoints. I've got a website in the works, that will be at
joyofunix.com. I'm aiming to get the first issue out sometime in December.

Here are some ideas I have for articles. Submissions along these lines are
greatly desired! (See end for submission information)

Tips and Tricks: This will be a regular feature, with a number of quick
time-saving tricks. These can be anything from neat regexs, to short
shell scripts, or even nifty obscure features of software like emacs, vim,
or mozilla.

Software Reviews: Pretty much what it sounds like. These articles will
look at a piece of software, evaluate the pros and cons, etc. While major
software will be reviewed, I'd also like to do reviews of lesser-known
software that many users may not be aware of.

Interviews: If you're the author or maintainer of a software package, I'd
love to do an interview. Just drop my an e-mail. You don't need to work on
a huge project like apache or Gnome. I'd love to bring some attention to
those of you in the trenchs, right programs we use and enjoy.

HowTos: Articles written in a tutorial style that explain, well, how to do
something. These can be for any level of user, for basic stuff like
configuring a shell prompt, to advanced network service use and
configuration (qmail, apache,etc).

Ask Tyler: Need help finding a way to do something? Having trouble with
your system? This will basically be a readers-questions-answered
section,as seen in many magazines.

Opinions: Got something you want to get off your chest? I'd like to run
it.

I'm willing to work with text in any format, but the absolute best format
is plain text, with TeX/LaTeX formatting added as needed. If you have
images that you wish included, please send them in PNG format. Indicate in
your text where the images should go. If you have content that you have
already written for your website, I have no problem running it. I don't
expect exclusivity. It is important to understand that your article will
be released under the Creative Commons license. This should not be an
issue, as it does not limit your ability to whatever you wish with your
material, but do be aware that it will allows others to republish it if
they wish.

If you are thinking of writing a new article, it is recommended that you
your topic by me. This way I can give feedback, and minimize the risk of
the article not being published. In general, the only time I'll decide not
to run a submission is if I've already run a very similar article.

With your submission, please include a short blurb about yourself. For
instance: Joe Gnu is a systems administrator for XYZ Corp. He runs a
website at http://www.joegnu.org. Feel free to plug your company, site, or
service in the blurb. That's why it's there.
