How large is the NetBSD user base ?

BSD-counter is stated to be broken, and I only found a 2-yr old
statement by De Kook saying that the main mailing list included 7500
addresses, among which several more lists. I like the concept of an
OS with a user base less multitudinous than just the employees of the
software company. I think their high number might have something to do
with the chaotic nature of their OS.
