That's fine. You can split(1) the floppies or install via
slip(4)/slattach(8) over a null modem serial cable.

Follow install.{txt, html} on how to make boot floppies using dd(1) or
rawrite.exe for boot-lap* install sets.
1.6x and -current run fine on 486s of all sorts.

I don't know if the sysinst that comes with 1.6.x has a menu for
configuring the SLIP connection, so just go into the utility menu and
start a shell and follow the setup directions perscribes in the man page
of the "NetBSD Guide" on www.netbsd.org
...or http://mjoc.sig.lt/netbsd/slip.html
On the other side of the SLIP connection, have a working box with an FTP
server and the entire installation directory hiearchy.

God speed. Might want to use XFree 3.x instead of 4.x. Do you
know what the framebuffer manufacturer is? Most old laptops had Cirus
Logic chips.
