As part of the install you are asked to configure the network,
which includes giving a host name for your machine. Did you
go through that step, where you give the IP address of your
gateway, name server, and the IP address of the target machine?
It sounds like something went wrong there.
You can use the 'Utility' menu to shart a shell and use ifconfig
and ping to check that the network is configured right.
