I switched back to FFS and now my world is right again. The original
problem must have been the disklabels on the component drives getting
overwritten. This is the only difference from the original, not
working, configuration. I've even successfully gone back to using the
entire /dev/raid0 drive in the a partition. Thanks for your help!
