Sigh, you still don't understand. I have a definite need for two
separate hierarchies:

/usr/pkg
        for those convenient ready-mades.
        These are under a guaranteed consistent build scheme as
        organized by the port maintainers. Dependencies are supposed
        to work, that is a package "foo" depending on "bar" will
        get a "bar" compiled with a suitable feature set and locations
        of files.

/usr/local
        for software which I prefer to configure with different feature
        sets; for which I do local modifications / bug fixes; for
        software which is not maintained as a port or not even generally
        available.

Now, why do I need to have them as seperate hierarchies? Simple:

I make frequent backups of /usr/local, and none of /usr/pkg. The
latter can easily be restored from a compact list of installed
packages and the original CDs. No reason to waiste time and tape
on that material.
