I've put together an Opteron system, and am having problems installing. This is
a dual-processor mobo, A8DAE from Acme Micro
(http://www.acmemicro.com/estore/merchant.ihtml?pid=42&lastcatid=170&step=4),
which seems to be a SuperMicro H8DAE in drag.
I've been trying to boot OpenBSD 3.7. The boot fails early on if I have more
than 4GB of RAM installed, complaining
WARNING: CAN'T ALLOCATE EXTENDED MEMORY FROM IOMEM EXTENT MAP!
skipping 4294901760 bytes of memory above 4GB
panic: init_x86_64: can't find end of memory
OK, I pull out the extra 4GB and get the point of being able to install, but a
number of devices don't configure correctly. So I pull out 2GB more and am able
to install and boot and set things up.
I spent last night running memtest86+ to see if I have flaky memory; no errors.
So now I'm guessing that OpenBSD doesn't quite have it together regarding large
memory on this chipset.
NetBSD's floppy boot comes up fine. I have a spare unix (ffs) 'partition' on one
of the disks and wouldn't mind a minimal install there. But since it's one big
fdisk partition, and marked OpenBSD, the NetBSD installer won't install
(reasonable choice).
Can I get away with marking the partition as NetBSD, and installing on the a
partition of that? Are the ffs implementations compatible? I have already copied
a fair bit of data onto this machine and would like to avoid redoing it ...
though it won't kill me.
Better, can someone point me to likely code to fix the OpenBSD memory manager? :-)
Thanks,
chris
