Acme is a very, very large SuperMicro dealer -- large enough that they get to
private-label some SuperMicro products. If they sell them as their own Acme
brand, and take the warranty obligation off SM's hands, they can sell them for
a little bit less.
Some other Acme products (like the 8176 and 8177 that we use) are Tyan
motherboards in Chenbro chassis. We're pretty happy with them.
We can't use the SuperMicro boards (though there's little reason to since we're
happy with the Tyan boards) because they use Marvell SATA controllers. Marvell
just released source to a Linux device driver for these chips but until about
3 weeks ago there was little chance we could get enough docs or code to write
an open-source driver for them.
The boards we use use the Silicon Image 3114 SATA chip. I don't know if it
can do NCQ; our driver for it can't, anyway. Performance is still good.
