OK, installing 3.0 fresh using a manual newfs and mount worked like a
charm. Missing from the documentation, however, is the fact that
/etc/fstab must be edited so that your filesystems mount read-write. Not a
huge deal, and easily fixed.

Now I just have some pkgsrc questions, but those are more suited to a new
thread, which I shall commence forthwith.
