bind 9 problems getting started

just installed bind9 from the ports tree (I'm still on 3.1, sorry). I've
got it going moderately well, but I'm trying to figure out where the
debug output goes - I've got the debug level up to 9 trying to puzzle
out some zone transfer problems and don't see anything anywhere.
Also, I find that dig's operation is a little different:
if I say
dig @localhost localhost
I can't contact any servers.
If I say, instead
dig @localhost. localhost
things work great. What gives? It almost seems that the server name
*must* be fully qualified? This is different from bind8 that I'm used to
elsewhere.
Thanks,
chris
