bind 9 problems getting started

    just installed bind9 from the ports tree (I'm still on 3.1, sorry). I've
    got it going moderately well, but I'm trying to figure out where the
    debug output goes - I've got the debug level up to 9 trying to puzzle
    out some zone transfer problems and don't see anything anywhere.

    Also, I find that dig's operation is a little different:

    if I say

    dig @localhost localhost

    I can't contact any servers.

    If I say, instead

    dig @localhost. localhost

    things work great. What gives? It almost seems that the server name
    *must* be fully qualified? This is different from bind8 that I'm used to
    elsewhere.
