Probably something to do with the disk geometry being foobar'd on boot.
During partitioning, it's <IMPOSSIBLE> to partition beyond the
boundries, but post install, it queries the drive (at least this is on
the i386 architecture) and the drive is supposed to send the proper data
back, but with BIOS' from 486 machines up, the BIOS can translate and
give weird responses to the OS.
Check for some sort of drive geometry information in the docs.
