How much MORE would you be willing to pay for an i386-only set?
Producing individual sets increases the work and costs, and it's
unlikely that the majority of people would buy multiple sets for
different architectures. Hence, the price of each individual set
would have to be higher than the one of the combined set, to
assure the same total income (minus production cost).
If you feel robbed for being forced to cross-finance CD sets for
less popular architectures with the current multi-platform set,
consider how much multi-platform support helps improve the code
quality on i386, too. Many bugs are found and fixed only because
the code is tested on non-i386 architectures. So, even if you're
only interested in i386 binaries, you still profit from the effort
spent on other architectures.
If I misinterpreted your drift, and you're not aiming for cheaper
i386-only sets but actually want to buy non-i386 sets, consider
the possibility that they might not sell in large enough numbers
to make their production pay off, and hence they'd not be made
anymore.
