remote access failing . . .

I've recently set up an OpenBSD 3.7 router and for the most part
everything is working fine -- with the exception of being able
to establish a remote connection to the gateway from external sites.

I'm pretty sure that the problem is with the OpenBSD configuration
because when I roll my router configuration back to its previous
FreeBSD configuration, I'm able to establish a remote connection
from external sites with no problem.

When the OpenBSD box is up and I run traceroute from an externl site,
the trace halts at a router (on the Verizon network) one hop away
from connecting to my network segment. I've verified this by
running a traceroute from the FreeBSD box and the traceroute traces
to my FreeBSD gateway host with no problem.

Could the hung OpenBSD trace have to do with the MTU/MSS settings?

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Any suggestions for a workaround would be quite welcome.

Thanks in advance.
