openbsd 3.8 isakmpd x509 issues

greetings. well, i tried setting up an ipsec tunnel between two hosts with openbsd3.8 and using isakmpd - using preshared keys went fine, using certificates did not. identical setup on two openbsd 3.7 hosts did work with both preshared key and using certificates. i don't think this is a known issue. at least 'googling around' did not show anything. neither did the newsgroups. any hints appreciated.
