Had you even bothered to read the FAQ, as previously recommended, you

The short answer is yes.

Perhaps you should just stay with your click and drool Linux and Windows.

It is beginning to look like that will be the course I will take, even
though you appear to not like them from the wording of your comment
above. It's all about requirements and choices, and fortunately we
have choices we can make in most countries of the world.

Maybe I haven't been clear on my requirements, but I'm looking for a
ready to use OS, not one that I have to put together things to get
one. To me the instructions on creating the install CD is not trivial.
To you it is. That just means our requirements and abilities are
different, it doesn't mean yours are wrong in any way.

I am going to burn the install iso and try that as suggested by
someone else, even though it looks too small to allow me to do a net
install. Maybe there's just enough in that (relatively) small file to
allow me to do a net install. The partition is clean and ready to try
another BSD, so I haven't given up yet.

Also, I'm not ready to ditch a few programs that I paid good money for
that are windows programs, and these have no close equivalents in Unix
type programs, so that requirement is non-negotiable. Wine must work
in the OS I choose for the laptop. For almost all other programs, even
ones I paid for (like MS Office) and work well for me in Windows,
there are suitable equivalents, so it's not like I need to run
everything I have been using before under Wine. Just a few programs.
