Re: ODBC on UNIX/Linux? Want to support UNIX ODBC in my xtopdf project

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I'll check out the Drivers section.

Hi,

Does anyone have experience using ODBC on UNIX? UNIXODBC or any other
variant?

Dear vasudevram,

yes, we have experience using ODBC also with Linux/UNIX.

I am and will search, of course - both the Web and newsgroups - but was
interested to hear from people with current or near-current experience
with any such ODBC software for UNIX/Linux. This is in order to check
out possibility of adding UNIX ODBC support to my xtopdf open source
project - http://sourceforge.net/projects/xtopdf. Its a toolkit to help
convert other file formats to UNIX. Currently supports these input
modes - plain text and .DBF (XBase files) - (stable), and CSV, TDV,
and Windows ODBC (alpha).

The kind of info I'm interested in - about UNIX ODBC - is :

Is is more or less the same as Windows ODBC? in the API, architecture
(driver manager + database-specific drivers), etc?

Yes, also the functions are the same.

How stable is it?

Good for production use. Some of our customers are using our ODBC driver
through unixODBC for accessing mainframe data.

How many drivers are available for different databases and how stable
are those drivers?

see http://www.unixodbc.org/ Section "Drivers"

How many open source drivers are there for the common / major databases
on UNIX/Linux?
(like MySQL, PostGreSQL, etc.)

see http://www.unixodbc.org/ Section "Drivers"

Thanks in advance, and I'll summarize. Will also post here if and when
the UNIX ODBC support is added to xtopdf.

You're welcome,
Axel.
