Hi all,

I've been digging through both the man pages and the online docs at
www.sun.com
to find out if it's possible to restrict access to ftp users "read only".

What I mean is, there is a directory tree on one of our servers that has a
certain
set of permissions that am not allowed to alter. ACLs are used, and the net
effect
is not what I want, because both user and group permissions are rwx, and I
want
no one except the owner of the files to be able to erase or modify anything
from
ftp. In fact, it would be just fine if no one could modify the files via
ftp. But the
filesystem permissions themselves have to stay as they are due to
application
requirements.

So, what I'm asking is, is there some way that I can, for ftp only, limit
all sessions
to read only or limit all sessions for a particular account to read only
(regardless
of permissions on the file system).

Seems this is possible in Windows NT, but I haven't found yet a way to do it
for Solaris. I thought perhaps I could NFS mount (RO) my own directory but
that's a rather inelegant solution.

I can summarize answers to the group if there is interest.

Thanks all, and have a good day.

Patrick Taylor
