But if this code is being used in a script, then the error
messages might not be so easily ignored.

True.

I agree that blanks and newlines in filenames are unusual.
I never care, usually, if my solutions handle such filenames
because I don't deal with them much. To me, if a filename
contains a blank or newline (esp the newline) it is broken
and should be fixed. Stephane, on the other hand, is very
thorough and I always appreciate that, despite the filter
my mind applies to his answers. I presume his experience
is such that his being thorough is a policy that has saved
him countless hours, and I feel a subtle prodding when I
read Stephane's posting to be thorough, too.

Then OP has larger problems, naturally.

Alan, one huge convenience (nay purpose) of the NGs is
to archive answers for posterity. How pointless if every
answer was lost to all except those who were around during
the brief period their news server kept the posting.

The community of each NG tends to want the best possible
answers provided to each poster. That is, people like
Stephane, Thomas Dickey, Barry Margolin, Brian Hiles,
etc etc, chime in when they have something to add, based
upon their expertise and experience.

Watching this posting reminds me of your recent exchange
with Thomas Dickey, another guru beyond compare. I'm
hopeful that exchanges such as yours aren't perceived
as rude and drive these fine gentlemen away.

Please try to be kindler and gentler.
