Help me with Unix on Mac OS X..Trying to install x11/fink/gnome

I am running panther, and I would really like to run x11 on my mac.
With x11 i would like to use gnome as my window manager, and I would
like to connect to my mac remotely to see the gnome desktop. I have
tried doing this through fink, and it never compiles right. Could
someone tell me how to do this, or list all the files/depedencies that
I need to do this? I have the xcode developer tools installed.
